Adaptive Reuse Examples

There are historic structures adaptively reused to provide commercial opportunities or accommodate unique and interesting living spaces throughout Chester County. Some are in urban centers, such as the Foundry in Phoenixville, the Midway Arts Center in Coatesville, and the Uptown Knauer Theatre in West Chester, while the People's Light and Theatre is in a suburban landscape near Malvern. Some are in more rural areas of the county such as St. Peter's Bakery in St. Peter's Village and Old Stone Cider in Lewisville.

View a PDF of Adaptive Reuse in Chester County Map, or the interactive map below, that shows the general location of the first 25 adaptive reuses followed by a listing that will be included as part of this website. This list will continue to evolve and include examples of adaptive reuse of every size and scale in every type of landscape: agricultural, rural, suburban, and urban.

Michelle Thakrah, an architect and partner with Archer and Buchanon Architects, summed things up quite simply, "Adaptive reuse is a huge part of why we love Chester County."
